UQCC Rider Rachel Edwards World 24H Solo MTB Age Group Champion

At the WEMBO World 24 Hour Solo Championships held in Finale Ligure, Italy on the 20th of May. Rach won her age group and was 5th overall for the women! Full results are here and photo album here.

Congratulations Rach, an incredible achievement. I think it’s difficult to put into words how gruelling a race like this can be but Shannon Duggan, another Uni rider and Rach’s personal soigneur, mechanic, nutritionist and therapist for the race, comes close in his report:

<

blockquote> Rach is an absolute animal and there is not another rider I respect more. She consistently demonstrated during the entire trip such determination, grit, focus, dedication, capacity to hurt, perseverance and fearlessness.

The course was an absolute ball tearer and no profile or pictures can tell the story completely. It was rough, incredibly technical, had an enormous amount of climbing for such a race and had terrain variations that ensured you could never relax. Infact there were really only 2 x 400-600m sections on the entire 18km loop that were easy enough to eat or drink on. Testament to this as that people were walking certain climbs from lap 2. Even Jess Douglas and Jason English the incumbent open champs commented on how hard and challenging the course was.

I rode the majority for a few days prior whilst we practiced and even doing it at a leisurely pace left you smashed. Coupled with sheer cliff drops on single track less than a meter wide that if you made the slightest error on serious injury or worse was a guarantee made the psychological component more daunting.

A serious crash and injuries on lap 1 resulted in only having 3 gears for the first 8 laps until she finally told me it had to be fixed. Coping with the cuts, abrasions and muscular injuries only made it harder and required Rach to eventually ask for panadol, something I have never seen her do before.

Friends don’t let friends do 24 hour races a wise person said to me and to an extent I know why. It destroys the competitors physically, mentally and emotionally. And yet they battle on, always pushing each other until the very end. If you think you know pain and endurance I challenge you to race one of these seriously and see if your current understanding holds true at the end.

As a teammate and friend it was hard to keep putting Rach out for lap after lap especially when the Temp drops and it started rain. By the end of the race I could see physically the changes resulting from significant weight loss, dehydration and fatigue. Truly Brutal.

Rach is a competitor and has a knack for being able to push herself harder, faster and for longer than her competitors and this trait is awe inspiring.

On a lighter side Rach was popular with the italian men cutting laps and did her best to maintain the utmost feminine decorum at all times. Va’ fa’ un culo.

Truly impressive ride by a dedicated athlete who well deserves the results she has achieved.
